This is a common situation with couples particularly when the weight of each person
varies to a significant degree. The most common causes include the disturbance created
when one partner gets into the bed consequently disrupting the sleep of the other
and when one partner turns in their sleep, particularly when this is a common occurrence
during the night.
The mattress type is a major contributor to this situation and most likely caused
by the coiled spring unit where all the springs are linked and the disturbance is
readily relayed to all the adjoining springs.
Above average restlessness from a variety of situations including poor posture and
peak pressure on hips and shoulders will result in one or both partners being disturbed
numerous times during the night.
In extreme situations couples have elected for separate beds however for many this
is not the preferred option from a relationship perspective, and in fact may not
be necessary.
There are two contributing factors to the solution comprising:
- Selecting a mattress type with a technical construction
that minimises disturbance, and…
- Selecting a bed system that improves the sleep quality
of each partner to reduce restlessness.
As previously mentioned, coiled “linked springs” are more likely to cause partner
disturbance and alternative mattress types include pocket springs or latex. The
pocket springs are not directly linked to each other therefore the disturbance is
not transferred as readily as a linked coiled spring mattress. The natural properties
of latex rubber clearly illustrate the least amount of disturbance for each partner
by comparison to coil and pocket springs.
Partner disturbance is often associated with the poor sleep quality of one or both
partners. This unnatural restlessness resulting in above average tossing and turning
during the night may be caused by poor posture and peak pressure.
Therefore with the right mattress and bed system combination partner disturbance
can be considerably reduced without the need for separate beds.
