Neck pain is most commonly associated with incorrect alignment of the spine between
the shoulders and head. This is often caused by the position of the shoulders being
too high on the mattress with a pillow height that is, in relation to the shoulder
position, too low. Neck pain can be due to the unnatural stresses on the upper section
of the spine and/or the tension experienced in the muscles in this region.
The key to relieving neck pain is to improve the posture of the upper section of
the human form. The shoulder must be enabled to immerse more into the mattress to
reduce the distance between the head and the sleep surface. This should be undertaken
in conjunction with the correct pillow height.
As the distance between the head and sleep surface is greater when a person is lying
on their side compared to when they are lying on their back, it is difficult to
find a pillow height and shape that suits both positions.
Therefore by lowering the shoulder the distance between the two positions is a closer
match thus retaining an improved posture when lying in both the side and back position.
It is important to ensure the posture, particularly in the shoulder/neck zone is
as close to the natural posture as possible. This will ensure the airway restrictions
are minimal and improve the inhaling and exhaling. This can be achieved by ensuring
the shoulder is able to immerse sufficiently into the mattress and, combined with
the most suitable pillow height, improve posture.
The correct bed type that reduces peak pressure on shoulders and hips will provide
a more natural sleep position for people who have a natural tendency to sleep in
the side position.
