The mattress reacts to his 'weight' along the mattress and supports him like this:
Because his actual body 'SHAPE' Curve has to re-adjust and twist to fit the 'WEIGHT'
Curve taken by the mattress, Stresses occur in his body and in particular his shoulders
and spine
So – instead of 'resting' the body, the mattress is 'stressing' the body, we call that "shoessosis". What is
needed is a bed system that 'corrects' the 'WEIGHT' Curve (that the mattress shapes
itself into) to be similar to that of the body's actual 'SHAPE' Curve – like so:
To ensure the bed you select is just right for you and your partner and contours
correctly, visit the pages titled
Body Profile to obtain a short list of recommendations
to suit your height, weight and shape profile and the existing health conditions
that may be contributing to poor sleep.
Whatever material is used in the mattress to support the body reacts to "weight"
– not "shape".
So… for the mattress to support you correctly…your torso should be "heaviest" where
you are wide or curve outwards (e.g. your shoulders, hips, bottom) and "lightest"
where you are narrow or curve in (e.g. lower back).
But… if the "weight distribution" along your body lying down is NOT in proportion
to your "shape" (and most people’s are not) then your shoulders will be twisted
and your spine misaligned.
Beds for Backs can help you not only select the right bed for you but also provide
a bed with the right support system for your partner, particularly if you are a
different weight and shape. We have developed a testing procedure and friendly advice
to show you which bed provides you the best posture in the sleeping position.
