DURABILITY: What's in a bed?

Many bed manufacturer's offer a 15 Year Warranty. This is valuable from the point of view that the Warranty covers the manufacturing workmanship for 15 years…this is not to say the bed will last the full 15 years although it may be possible.

In Australia we change our beds once every 15 years on average, sometimes in the range 20 – 25 years.

It is accepted that, in normal use conditions, a bed is likely to last 8 – 10 years on average. This will be less with inferior products due to the lower grade materials used in producing less expensive items.

But whether the materials of low or high grade quality, we recommend customers consider that a bed being used over an 8 – 10 year period is going to collect a large amount of body fluids and skin scalings, so from a health point of view many customers prefer to change their mattress every 5 – 8 years

The durability of your bed will also be affected by the way you use it. Normal use is using the bed for sleeping on for approximately 8 hours per night. Should you require to sleep or obtain bed rest for the majority of a 24 hour period it is not expected the bed will last as long in normal use.

Sitting on the bed for prolonged periods will also affect the life of the bed, more so if you sit in one position as you will be concentrating your weight all in one spot. This is sometimes a practice of people who use the bed to sit on while they operate a computer or work on a desk in close proximity to the side of the bed. If you need to sit down to put on your shoes for example, consider placing a chair in your bedroom rather than sit on the edge of the bed.

It's nice to have grandchildren visit or your children play on the bed with you, but if there is excessive jumping on the bed or general roughness this can reduce the life time of the mattress.

Manufacturer's provide a guide to rotating and turning the mattress. This assists in more evenly distributing the normal wear of the mattress so the mattress can perform suitably for the optimum period of time.

Your bed is an important item in your home. Its vital role is to provide you with the right comfort and support for 8 – 10 years so if you look after it, it will look after you.
