People, who do not sleep well, mainly due to sleeping on the wrong bed, are not allowing their body to rest and recover from the effort of the previous day.
How do you wake up in the morning? Do you feel lethargic, stiff or sore?
Beds for Backs have a range of solutions to these health problems.

Here are a few reasons why the wrong bed can contribute to health problems:
 Poor Circulation |
Due to shape variation in our body the shoulders and hips are the points where we experience the most peak pressure when lying on our side often resulting in stiffness and soreness at these extreme points.
The stiffness and soreness can be caused by poor circulation occurring due to the mattress support incorrectly placing too much pressure in the wrong places. This will result in frequent disturbances in your sleep as your body demands a change of position seeking relief.
The peak pressure on shoulders can result in a disruption of blood flow often causing a tingling sensation in fingers, loss of feeling in arms and aching muscles. Peak pressure on hips can cause a numb feeling on the hip, pain or discomfort in the legs.
Varying the level of support along the body reduces peak pressure on hips and shoulders
 Interrupted Breathing |
Sleeping on the wrong bed can often cause interruption to your breathing resulting in not only excessive snoring but also a lack of oxygen circulating through your body again contributing to restlessness and frequent awakening.
Snoring is a well researched and documented sleep disorder with a wide range of contributing causes. In relation to bed types, it is recognised that poor posture can be a contributing factor.
Air passageways can be affected by poor posture, particularly in the shoulder/neck zone. (SEE NECK PAIN – Recommended Solutions)
Due to peak pressure on hips and shoulders, some people find it necessary to lie on their back however, in this position, some people find they are more prone to snoring than when they lie in the side position.
It is important to ensure the posture, particularly in the shoulder/neck zone is as close to the natural posture as possible. This will ensure the airway restrictions are minimal and improve the inhaling and exhaling. This can be achieved by ensuring the shoulder is able to immerse sufficiently into the mattress and, combined with the most suitable pillow height, improve posture.
The correct bed type that reduces peak pressure on shoulders and hips will provide a more natural sleep position for people who have a natural tendency to sleep in the side position.
Partner Disturbance |
This is a common situation with couples particularly when the weight of each person varies to a significant degree. The most common causes include the disturbance created when one partner gets into the bed consequently disrupting the sleep of the other and when one partner turns in their sleep, particularly when this is a common occurrence during the night.
The mattress type is a major contributor to this situation and most likely caused by the coiled spring unit where all the springs are linked and the disturbance is readily relayed to all the adjoining springs.
Above average restlessness from a variety of situations including poor posture and peak pressure on hips and shoulders will result in one or both partners being disturbed numerous times during the night.
In extreme situations couples have elected for separate beds however for many this is not the preferred option from a relationship perspective, and in fact may not be necessary.
There are two contributing factors to the solution comprising:
- Selecting a mattress type with a technical construction that minimises disturbance, and…
- Selecting a bed system that improves the sleep quality of each partner to reduce restlessness.
As previously mentioned, coiled “linked springs” are more likely to cause partner disturbance and alternative mattress types include pocket springs or latex. The pocket springs are not directly linked to each other therefore the disturbance is not transferred as readily as a linked coiled spring mattress. The natural properties of latex rubber clearly illustrate the least amount of disturbance for each partner by comparison to coil and pocket springs.
Partner disturbance is often associated with the poor sleep quality of one or both partners. This unnatural restlessness resulting in above average tossing and turning during the night may be caused by poor posture and peak pressure.
Therefore with the right mattress and bed system combination partner disturbance can be considerably reduced without the need for separate beds.
Neck Pain |
Neck pain is most commonly associated with incorrect alignment of the spine between the shoulders and head. This is often caused by the position of the shoulders being too high on the mattress with a pillow height that is, in relation to the shoulder position, too low. Neck pain can be due to the unnatural stresses on the upper section of the spine and/or the tension experienced in the muscles in this region.
The key to relieving neck pain is to improve the posture of the upper section of the human form. The shoulder must be enabled to immerse more into the mattress to reduce the distance between the head and the sleep surface. This should be undertaken in conjunction with the correct pillow height.
As the distance between the head and sleep surface is greater when a person is lying on their side compared to when they are lying on their back, it is difficult to find a pillow height and shape that suits both positions.
Therefore by lowering the shoulder the distance between the two positions is a closer match thus retaining an improved posture when lying in both the side and back position.
Back Problems, The Common Complaint |
Many of our customers come to us because of back problems that have occurred through
workplace injuries, sporting injuries or a variety of other causes of back problems.
We have an interesting discussion with all of them after which they leave with a more detailed knowledge of how the right bed can help existing back conditions and prevent back problems occurring.
If you currently suffer from back problems, the right bed can assist by providing the right support your back needs. If you don’t have back problems it is also important to have the right bed to assist in
preventing against back problems occurring.
Our spine is made so that in the upright position it works quite well, but when we lie down the individual components of our spine are subjected to stress and tension, just like a bridge?
If your back is not correctly supported, over time there is a weakening of the components between the disks as shown below:
Many times people “have felt their back give” when lifting relatively light objects. They blame the lifting. But the problem actually started due to a progressive weakening of the spine structure over a period of time…often caused by sleeping on the incorrect bed. This is a very good reason to make sure you select the right bed and look after your back for today and the future.
The significant requirement in this instance is to improve posture so the muscular/skeletal structure of the human form is as close to the “zero stress” position as practical. When the human form is standing upright, the spine is straight in the vertical plane with the shoulders and hips square in the horizontal plane, i.e. “zero stress” on the spine and muscles.
Improved posture has been strongly advocated by health professionals for many years as a direct contributor for better health, when working in an office chair, sitting in a car seat, etc. for prolonged periods. Then why not consider improved posture while resting or sleeping on a bed for 8 hours each night.
Many bed manufacturers claim their bed will give you a straight profile but are these just “marketing claims” or are they able to “prove” this can be achieved? Beds for Backs can! (SEE SLEEP RESEARCH)
The solution is to, not only select a bed that has your preferred comfort level, but one that you can adjust to suit your individual body weight and shape.
Sore Hips |
Discomfort and soreness on the hip joint can often be associated with too much
pressure usually when the hip width and waist width vary. The amount of pressure
can interrupt blood flow around the joint and, at times, extend further to legs
and feet causing aching muscles and a tingling sensation in the feet.
A solution to relieve this condition is by increasing the level of support
in the lumbar area and decreasing the support in the hip area resulting in
a more even distribution of pressure along the body.
Osteoporosis |
Osteoporosis is a condition that affects many people in Australia and is a condition that progressively affects the skeletal structure. Any bone can be affected by osteoporosis but the most common are the bones in the hip, spine, wrist, ribs, pelvis and upper arm.
Osteoporotic fractures can lead to changes in posture and bone deformity of the spine resulting in chronic pain and disability.
Therefore it is important to consider a bed that provides the capability to adjust the level of support to improve posture and decrease peak pressure on hips and shoulders.
TEST....Don't Guess |
It is unfortunately common practice for people to choose a bed by visiting a variety of showrooms, laying on many types of beds (usually for 30 seconds at a time), listening to the often conflicting advice from the different sales staff and finally buying one that “feels” OK hoping that it will be alright.
Each Beds for Backs for Back
Showrooms has a full support testing facility and our helpful customer service staff can advise and assist you to identify the right bed system that suits you and your partner.
This innovative and valuable way of selecting the right bed will take approximately 20 – 30 minutes, but we’re happy to spend as long as you like so you can eventually enjoy a comfortable night sleep.
